Abstract

Questions about God's existence and work are important and interesting parts of theological discussion, not only among theologians, but almost in all levels of society people have their own concepts about God and His character. In the book of Ruth, one of the books of the Old Testament, the author describes the bitter events that the family of Elimelech experience happened during the time of the judges. This book describes the story of a family from Bethlehem, who went to live in Moab because of a famine in their home town. However, while they were in Moab, both Elimelech and his two sons died, leaving his wife Naomi and his two daughter-in-laws (Ruth and Orpha), as widows. Many commentators give different reasons for why these tragic events happened. Some argue that the reason Elimelech and his two sons died was because of disobedience to God, in that they left Bethlehem (which means "the house of bread" in Hebrew). However, perhaps there is a need to look at this from God's point in order to better understand this issue. Though short, this book still shows much about God's character and actions as He works in the lives of Naomi and Ruth. Besides describing the practical problems of everyday life, the writer of Ruth shows that God providentially is at work in the lives of believers to accomplish His plans.
