This paper presents part of the results of geotechnical investigation on a red residual soil deposit of Sanga, near Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Laboratory tests were carried out on disturbed and undisturbed samples taken from a single borehole drilled up to 9.5 m depth. The investigation covered chemical analysis to determine the nature of the red soil deposit, index properties as well as the effect of sample drying methods on the Atterberg limits and compaction characteristics of the soil. The ratio of silica oxides to the metal sesquioxides in the soil was found to vary from 1.97 to 2.22, indicating that the soil generally falls in the categories of |
