Abstract

Concrete brick is one of building materials, has a contribution as a load on the structure such as beams, columns and foundation. Lightweight concrete brick is expected to reduce the load on the structure, so that the dimensions of the load receiving structure can also be minimized. The utilization of waste styrofoam and sawdust of coconut trunk used as a replacement of sand which is a way to produce lightweight concrete brick. On this research, materials that are used as a mixture of lightweight concrete brick composed of cement, sand and styrofoam, where the ratio 1pc: 4Ps, partly of sands substituted by a styrofoam by 80% of volume. To increase the compressive strength of styrofoam brick, test specimens were given mortar coating with various of thickness of 0 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm, where some sand in the ratio 1pc: 5Ps substituted by 15% of sawdust of coconut trunk. Laboratory testing of concrete brick of styrofoam composite coating included a test mortar compressive strength and water absorption test. The results of this test showed that the compressive strength and the average of water absorption of cube mortar cube (with sawdust), with 256 MPa and 14.35%, whereas without sawdust amounted to 6.1416 MPa and 10.22%. The use of 15% of sawdust of coconut trunks as a partial substitute for sand to make mortar cube compressive strength tends to decrease, but water absorption increased. Compressive strength test results of styrofoam brick mortar with composite coatings at T-10 = 2.79 MPa and T-15 = 3.44 MPa are qualified for the concrete brick of level IV of 2.5 MPa. While the test results of water absorption of styrofoam brick mortar with composite coatings at T-0 = 9.04%, T-5 = 10.55%, T-10 = 11.63% and T-15 = 14.04%, qualified for the maximum average of water absorption of 25% (SNI-03-0349-1989). The aim of this research is to produce the lightweight concrete brick has reached on the whole variation of the thickness of mortar coating, where the maximum weight at T-15 = 9.321 kg is lighter than the heavy concrete blocks on the market of 14.4 kg. Thus, the styrofoam concrete brick with composite coatings at T-10 and T-15 has fulfill the physical requirement and quality of lightweight concrete brick level IV.
