A person being diagnosed with a mental condition is a major crisis for he, himself, as well as his whole family. This article discusses the negative beliefs of the general population both in Indonesia and the United States about people suffering from mental conditions, such as that this resulted from his personal sins, or that he has been cursed by God or is demon possessed. Sometimes the person is rejected by his family so that he becomes a homeless person living on the streets! This is illustrated by a book telling the life story of Ken Steele, who suffered from mental problem in the United States and was very poorly treated! He later became an activist, defending the well being of people with mental difficulties in the US Congress! Similar difficulties are faced by people here in Indonesia. Christian servants and families can be vital in helping these people find and maintain a healthy meaningful life. |
