Abstract

Buildings in seismic regions need a rigid structural member such as shear walls to act as stiffeners. For multi-story portals the shear wall is meant to resist horizontal load in the event of an earthquake. The purpose of this study is to compare the stiffness of two identical portals, one stiffened by a shear wall while the other portal did not have a shear wall. The following regulations and guideline were consulted in the analysis: Peraturan Pembebanan Indonesia untuk Gedung (Indonesian Building Loading Code) PPIUG 1983, Tata Cara Perhitungan Struktur Beton untuk Bangunan Gedung (Guideline to Perform Structural Analysis for Concrete Buildings), SNI-1726-2002, Standard Perencanaan Ketahanan Gempa untuk Struktur Bangunan Gedung (Standard for Earthquake Resistant Design for Building Structures), SNI 03-2874-2002. The structural analysis to compare the performance of the two portals was conducted with SAP 2000 v. 11.0 and Microsoft Excel 2010. The portal without shear wall has the maximum joint displacement in the X-direction = 13.05 mm and in the Y-direction = - 3.05 mm. For the portal with shear wall, the maximum joint displacements were 4.32 mm in the X-direction and -3.05 mm in the Y-direction. The maximum axial load for the portal without shear wall was 8.12 kN and
