Abstract

One of the ways to minimize the harmful effect of plastic waste, which are harmful for the environment, is to utilize the waste for useful purposes. In this study plastic waste is used as binding material for the fine aggregate used in the production of panel sheets. The plastic waste used in this study was polyethylenen terephthalate. Panel sheets of 3 cm x 10 cm x 20 cm were made of mixture of plastic waste and fine sand at different ratios of plastic and sand by weight, namely 1:0.5, 1:1, 1:1.5 and 1:2. For each mix, three specimens were made. The specimens were subjected to bending under a point load two days after they were prepared. The results of the experiments showed that the specimens with 1:2 plastic-sand ratio yielded the highest flexural strength of 7.50 MPa, while the lowest strength was produced by the specimen with 1:05 plastic-sand ratio, with a flexural strength of 2.50 MPa. In general, the higher the sand content, the higher the flexural strength was produced by the plastic-fine aggregate composite material.
