PENGARUH PERKUATAN KAWAT KASA ANYAM PADA DAERAH SELIMUT KOLOM BETON BERTULANG TERHADAP RETAKAN DAN DAKTILITAS

Abstract

Failure in columns is often preceded by the fracture of the concrete covering, which resulted in the reduction in the cross-sectional area of the column. This poses a dangerous situation particularly when the load is sudden, such as in the event of an earthquake, because of the sudden failure that the column could experience. This study involved the investigation of the effectiveness of reinforcing the concrete covering with wire mesh as an attempt to avoid sudden damage of the concrete covering. The study aimed to investigate the pattern and type of cracks which would occur on columns with covering that have been reinforced by wire mesh and to explore the effect of the presence of wire mesh on the load capacity of the column. Two reinforced concrete specimens were prepared for the investigation, each having a dimension of 14 cm x 14 cm x 118 cm. The concrete and aggregate ratios of the testing specimens were 1:1.75:2.5 for cement, sand and gravel, respectively. The reinforcing steel consisted of 10 mm diameter of deformed steel bars 6 mm diameter of plain steel bars used as stirrups. One of the specimens had a wire mesh reinforcement at its covering whereas the other specimen was a standard specimen with no extra reinforcement in the covering. Commercially available wire mesh made of 1 mm diameter wire and mesh opening of 25 mm x 25 mm was used for the specimen with reinforcement in the covering. Axial load was applied with an eccentricity of 7 cm measured from to the center of area of the cross section of the column. Result of the loading tests revealed that the column specimen with its covering reinforced by wire mesh experienced a higher axial strength of 7.97% beyond that of the column with no wire mesh reinforcement. Under the same intensity of load, the cracks observed in the column with wire mesh reinforcement were lesser in number, shorter and finer compared with the cracks observed in the standard specimen. The maximum deflection experienced by the column with wire mesh reinforcement prior to failure was 8.1 mm, whereas for the standard specimen it was 7.5 mm.
