Abstract

Peat is a highly organic soil originated from the decomposition of forrest vegetation. The soil is known to have a very low bearing capacity and extremely high compressibility, causing serious structural damages, including to the Trans Kalimantan Highway which passed through Tumbang Nusa, Central Kalimantan. This paper presents the test results of the peat samples taken along the highway in Tumbang Nusa. Disturbed and undistubed soil samples were retrieved from four shallow boreholes between two and three meters deep, located at around 300 meters from the side of the Highway. Laboratory tests were conducted to obtain the index properties of the soil. Consolidation test was conducted on one of the undisturbed samples to observe the compressibility characteristics of the soil. The results of the experiments revealed that the soil has water content that varied between 209,99% - 401,17%, liquid limit between 189,89% - 213,36% and plasticity index between 97,97% - 119,46%. The range of specific gravity was between 1,27
