Abstract

A series of tests have been carried out on compacted samples of an expansive clay from Ngawi, East Jawa, to study the swelling characteristics of the soil notorious for its high swelling and shrinking properties. Soil samples were taken from two boreholes drilled at two different locations in Ngawi to depths of 2.50 m. The swelling potential were measured using oedometer apparatus and the tests to obtain the swelling pressures were conducted using load swell test method of ASTM D 4546. The soil specimens were compacted at different initial water contents and dry densities. The results of the experiment revealed that the swelling potential and swelling pressure were affected by the initial water content and dry densities of the samples. Samples from depths closer to the ground surface have higher degree of swelling and higher swelling pressure than compared to samples taken from deeeper depths.
