Abstract

One of the methods known to enhance the strength of concrete is by providing admixture to replace part of the cement. One of the potential admixtures is the combination of fly ash and SikaCim Concrete Additive. SK SNI T-28-1991-03 defines high strength concrete as concrete with compressive strength ≥ 41.2 MPa. In this study an attempt was made to produce high strength concrete by using the above admixtures to partly replace cement. The study aimed at finding the optimum proportion of the admixtures in order to produce high strength concrete. Cubical testing specimens having dimensions of 15 cm x 15 cm x 15 cm were prepared with proportions of fly ash being 10%, 15%, 20% and 20% to the weight of the cement. The amount of SikaCim Concrete was 0.6% of the weight of water. The water cement ratio for all the specimens was 0.41. Five identical specimens were prepared for each proportion of admixture. Compression tests were carried out when the age of the specimen was 28 days. As reference, concrete specimen with no admixture were made and tested to yield a compressive strength of 38.5 MPa. All samples enriched with the admixtures with varying proportions exhibited higher compressive strength than the normal concrete. The highest compressive strength was achieved by the specimens where 20% of cement was substituted by fly ash, showing compressive strength of 59.95 MPa. The lowest compressive strength of 45.96 MPa was recorded on the specimen with 10% fly ash. All specimens achieved high strength category as defined by SK SNI T-28-1991-03.
