Abstract

The eruption of Mt. Merapi in 2010 brought an abundant amount of volcanic ash to Yogyakarta. In this research the volcanic ash, a pozzolanic material, was used to partly substitute cement in the production of concrete. The objective of this research was to obtain an optimum proportion of volcanic ash to cement to enhance the compressive strength of the concrete. Cubical testing specimens having dimensions of 15 cm x 15 cm x 15 cm were prepared with different proportions of volcanic ash to substitute the cement. The amount of volcanic ash was 5%, 10% and 15% of the cement by weight. The water cement ratio for all the specimens was 0.57. Five identical specimens were prepared for each volcanic ash-cement proportion. Compression tests were carried out 28 days after the specimens were cast. The compressive strength of the testing specimen with no volcanic ash was found to be 24.5 MPa, and this was used as a reference to compare the strength of the specimens with volcanic ash. Result of the investigation revealed that the specimens with 10% volcanic ash yielded the highest compressive strength at average compressive strength of 29.65 MPa, followed by the specimens with 15% volcanic ash at 27.431 MPa. The lowest average compressive strength was noted in the samples with 5% volcanic ash, which was 24.141 MPa. Except for those with 5% replacement of volcanic ash, which showed slight decrease in strength compared to the standard specimen with no volcanic ash, all other specimens showed gains in the compressive strength compared to the standard specimen.
