Abstract

This paper presents the results of soil investigation on an expansive clay deposit in the city of Ngawi, East Jawa. Disturbed and undisturbed samples were obtained from three boreholes drilled in three different locations in Ngawi. The boreholes were drilled with hand auger to depths of around 2.5 m. Laboratory tests were carried out to find out the index properties of the soil, as well as free swell tests and consolidation tests. The results from the index tests and free swell tests were used to classify the swelling potential of the soil, making use of some of the criteria given in the references. The result of the tests revealed that the soil in Borehole I and III consisted of two layers; from the ground surface to 1.5 m depth the soil was black fine grained soil while below 1.5 m the soil was black fine grained soil with increasing presence of white coarse grained particles. In all the boreholes the black color of the soil has shades of either grey or brown. The classification of the soil in the entire depth of all the boreholes was CH. Plotting the test results on several expansive soil classification charts, it was discovered that the clay in Ngawi falls into high to very high category in the chart introduced by Seed et al (1962) and very high to extra high in the Van der Merwe (1975) chart. The upper layer has higher swelling potential than the lower layer. A significant feature observed in the results from the consolidation tests was that high degree of volume rebound the samples exhibited, especially at lower level of stresses.
